HEALTH INTEGRATOR

The method identifies with greater certainty those who are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes

LIFE SCIENCE & MEDICAL

In collaboration with Health Integrator, Knowit has developed an improved methodology and tool to better identify individuals at risk of type 2 diabetes. By combining medical science and data analysis the tool has the potential to change the quality of life for thousands of people. As well as relieving the public health service of enormous costs.

One of our biggest global diseases

Diabetes is one of the biggest global diseases today with 500 million people diagnosed worldwide. In Sweden more than 30 percent of adults are at risk of developing diabetes due to lack of preventive measures. The estimated cost for the Swedish society is 300 million SEK yearly.

To prevent this scale up, people need an easy and accessible tool to forecast and get help to make new choices in their everyday life. We joined forces with Health Integrator, a digital solution that empower people to reduce the risk of chronic diseases by helping them make healthier choices. Together we combined our knowledge within tech and data analysis with their medical expertise, to find a way to do a more precise risk calculation, that can categorise individuals by scoring their risk to develop T2 diabetes.

Improving risk calculation

We researched and evaluated the most common used methods to identify individuals at risk of developing T2 diabetes. With the technology available today the team were able to improve the scoring and identification of symptoms both by reaching out to a larger target group and by adding more variables to the mix, socioeconomic background, number of sick days, income and group affiliation.

By training machine learning models combined with visualization and SAS Viaya we were able to get a deeper understanding of why diabetes transpires and how we better can mitigate the risks. The result of the pre-studies is a new diamond standard for diabetes analysis, KnowRisc, Knowit diabetes risk score.

The Knowit team set out to improve the methodology for predicting type 2 diabetes, to save the society large medical bills and increase the lifespan and quality of life for countless of people. All resulting in the new diamond standard for diabetes analysis, KnowRisc.

Preventing disease

Knowrisc is a tool that can be used by individuals to calculate the risk of developing T2 diabetes. When the scoring is calculated, the individuals with high risk can be helped to make changes in their life towards better choices and habits for their health.

The user completes a self-assessment of their health habits. Based on that, a health score is obtained, and the user is invited to take a blood sample depending on the result. Glucose levels are then tested for a period of 3 months. Depending on the need, the user can receive support from a health coach, and tailored recommendations for a sustainable lifestyle.

This solution is our contribution to SAS Hackathon, and it is presented as inspiration for the Swedish public health care.

How the solution contributes to Agenda 2030

Our partnership with Health Integrator is a proof of how technology and digitalization can be integrated in health care and ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. Working towards UN's Sustainable Development Goal number 3 good health and well-being.
