Veikkaus streamlines test data generation with AI

Veikkaus operates under exceptionally strict data protection standards—GDPR compliance is only the baseline. Test data must be managed according to rigorously defined procedures and multiple layers of security, while remaining auditable and scalable over time.

Fully synthetic data was not a viable option due to the complexity of the system environment, which demands preserved data integrity and accurate relational structures within the databases. The existing process for creating test data was manual, time-consuming, and resource-intensive—resulting in an increased risk of error. A new solution was needed: one that could generate test data quickly, securely, and at scale, without compromising data privacy.

Knowit has been a long-standing partner to Veikkaus in quality assurance. When the need arose to modernize test data management, Knowit was tasked with evaluating possible approaches and delivering an efficient solution that balanced rigorous testing needs with strict privacy standards.

As there were no off-the-shelf solutions available that met Veikkaus’ requirements, Knowit supported the identification of suitable technology and helped develop procurement documentation. The chosen platform was Tonic Structural—an AI-based tool that could be deployed within Veikkaus’ own cloud infrastructure.

Tonic enables secure handling and anonymization of test data, with real-time detection of changes that may compromise data integrity. To meet Veikkaus’ high standards, Knowit further customized the solution, automating the entire test data generation process.

One key objective was the ability to generate data in a coordinated way across multiple systems. To that end, Knowit built a centralized administrative interface, enabling simultaneous data generation for all environments and databases—ensuring both high data quality and structural consistency.

The architecture was designed to give Veikkaus full ownership and control. All operations are managed internally with no access for external parties. Knowit’s cross-functional team—spanning quality assurance, AI, software development, and cloud expertise—ensured a technically sound, scalable, and future-proof solution.

Test data is far more than a technical detail—it’s a critical component for ensuring continuity and quality in operations. With the new solution, Veikkaus can now generate and utilize test data daily instead of just a few times per year. This has significantly shortened lead times in testing phases and made the development process far more agile and efficient.

The solution exceeded all expectations. It’s not merely a new tool, but an entirely new way of working with testing. Despite the complexity of the implementation, the end result is easy to maintain and free of unnecessary complexity.
