BACKGROUND
A foundation for transformation
Over the past decade, Stockholm Exergi has digitized significant portions of its district heating network, leading to both customer-centric innovations and internal efficiencies. A prime example is Intelligy Solutions—a platform that connects buildings to district heating substations to optimize energy use. This results in improved indoor climates, enhanced energy efficiency, and a more reliable system.
As digital tools continue to reshape work and collaboration, organizations must adapt swiftly to remain competitive. To future-proof its internal capabilities and maintain its competitive edge, Stockholm Exergi partnered with Knowit to assess its maturity as a digital service provider in the energy sector. The goal was to evaluate the existing product organization, identify key areas for improvement, and implement prioritized actions.
CHALLENGE
A new operating model for digital product development
The initiative was structured into two phases. Initially, the existing organizational capabilities were analyzed and compared to a target state developed in collaboration with key stakeholders. This assessment provided a clear understanding of the necessary changes and formed the basis for a concrete transformation plan.
In the subsequent phase, changes were implemented through a tailored improvement program. Teams received support in their daily operations, and new working methods were anchored in line with "The Exergi Way"—the company's established methodology and culture.

The collaboration yielded an updated strategy, an improved operational model, and new organizational structures, including dedicated product teams. Work processes were modernized with a particular focus on customer collaboration, agile planning, and continuous development.
These changes have strengthened Intelligy Solutions and equipped Stockholm Exergi with a product organization better prepared to develop and scale digital services. With clearer structures, faster processes, and a focus on customer value, the company is now more effectively driving the energy transition through smarter energy production, resource-efficient usage, and robust district heating networks.
