Detailed design

Once the concept is stable we can turn our attention to the detailed design. This means further refining the graphic design and the look of the interface. We work in a graphics program, setting exact font sizes, colors, layout and images. Every pixel counts.

To obtain a responsive interface, many design decisions are made by the interface developer when the interface model is coded. This includes finishing touches like animation timing, mouse-over effects and statuses of interactive elements. Details like this are what creates the visitor’s impression of the solution. The model is a kind of prototype. The interface is coded so it can be validated against the selected standards and can be tested for various mobile clients in our test lab. For web sites, HTML and CSS files are generated in the development tool and checked into our code handling system. In principle, part of the implementation phase has started. The model allows for usability testing and accessibility testing to a high level of reliability because the user experience is as good as in the finished solution.

The work on creating the actual content can start in the design phase, using a standard word processor. By this stage we know how the pages will be arranged, how much text is needed and what the layout should be to fit the page types. Starting work on content well in advance makes it quicker to finish everything off once the solution becomes stable.

Suggested solution

Once the outside of the concept has been defined, we can start to think about the best way to realize the selected technology and platform. For web sites, the architect has general responsibility for deciding, with the developers, what page types will be needed in the CMS and what editing functions and flexible options the solution will have. This phase is about mapping the requirements and the sketches to the page types. The process is sometimes tricky. Some requirements (especially content requirements) can be met with one page type, but the design might need multiple variants of each page type.

Internal concept

We develop the internal concept of the solution to make it is easy and efficient to use. Modern digital solutions are increasingly demanding in terms of relevance and personalization, and this in turn requires intelligent content management and integration with underlying systems. After creating proposals for all key parts of the internal concept, we complete the backlog and produce a detailed estimate of the implementation work. The product vision is relatively clear at this stage, and the estimate is much more accurate now that the scope of the development work is evident.
