The National Maritime Museums in Sweden get new websites

The National Maritime Museums in Sweden (SMM) has selected Knowit for development of its four websites. As a public agency, SMM has a responsibility to strive to make its operations accessible to all and complete accessibility is one of the watchwords of the operational vision. The websites fulfil a central role in SMM’s digital strategy. Knowit supplies continual technical support and application management and, upon call-off, new and further development of the websites.

The websites covered by this assignment are,, and Knowit has begun a feasibility study regarding a new website for the Vasa Museum, a solution for booking guided tours at the Vasa Museum and a solution for pre-purchasing of tickets to the museums.

– The new websites will have a responsive design, making them accessible in all types of units: computers, tablets and smartphones, regardless of model. We see that traditional PCs are being used less, in favor of smartphones. It is particularly important to adapt websites to the new channels, considering the client’s need to be accessible, says Fredrik Grahn, client manager at Knowit.

– Our external websites play an important role in our efforts to achieve complete accessibility. Continual development of accessibility and usability on the websites has high priority. At the top of the list is making the agency’s websites responsive and improving our calendar and blog functions, says Sofie Aspelin, head of information at the National Maritime Museums in Sweden.

The National Maritime Museums in Sweden is a public agency under the Ministry of Culture. SMM runs the Vasa Museum and the Maritime Museum in Stockholm and the Naval Museum in Karlskrona. By showing and tending the museum collections, by spreading information and supporting others who work in the field, SMM contributes to preserving, using and developing the maritime cultural heritage.
