The challenge

The OP-Pohjola Group has a complex business management system that demands exhaustive testing in the event of any changes. During 2011, three full-time testers were employed to test the system. In their estimation, updates planned for the future would demand a considerable increase in investment in total hours of testing.

Due to the lack of a suitable method for storing old, reusable data, testers manually prepared all test data.prior to each test run, and for each individual test case. In their own estimation, 20% of their working hours went to updating test data.

The solution

After carrying out our own Analysis at Knowit, it became apparent that the best way to streamline the process was to automate the handling of test data.

The first stage of the finished solution was to create a test data model to understand what types of data were most important. In order to glean this information, a program was used to collect and analyse what data was used most frequently. A logical function was subsequently developed containing all relevant information regarding the business processes. This was then refined over time.

Existing script for test automation was reused to check the credit system. This created loans and modified customer accounts with information that effected the loan process, such as carrying out purchases, withdrawing money from accounts, etc.
